Editions Fawbush is pleased to announce the publication of Behold, a sculptural ceramic edition by Randy Wray. Morphing together Wray’s usual mix of figuration and abstraction, Behold conjures diverse images ranging from floral arrangements to portrait busts, depending on its various angles and surfaces. Stylistically the work combines a self-taught primitivism with a refined sense of the Classical, exercising both intellect and intuition. The work grows out of Wray’s experiments with commercially available ceramic craft figures, an admittedly kitsch and humble beginning, and results in forms with an almost devotional or spiritual quality. For Behold, Wray modeled a form entirely from imagination and then added crystals, glass and mica, resulting in an object with seemingly dissonant inspirations. Part Rococo, part John Carpenter’s The Thing, playfulness, humor and terror, Behold is pure alchemy. Wray has stated that he is as likely to find inspiration in the philosophizing of Dolly Parton as he is from the Dalai Lama. Absurd limitations of the human condition, embraced.
